The Death Toll Mounts Across Ontario

UPDATE!!  Jan. 18/06  Recently announced regulations not only make it impossible to provide humane help for most orphaned wildlife in Ontario but the discretion given MNR area supervisors in their application will entrench a biased and inconsistent system.

Oct. 19/05 The new regulations:

MNR press release
EBR Posting
Wildlife Custodian Authorization Conditions
Wildlife Rehabilitation Policy
Wildlife Rehabilitation Procedure

April 23/05  Orphaned wildlife such as six two-week old baby raccoons are facing death because of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' barbaric regulations. Rehabilitators are sickened that they cannot help. As one stated, she is appalled that "we live in a society that jails people for allowing a dog to starve to death but condones a branch of government whose regulations mean healthy baby animals either have to be euthanized or left to starve to death".  Click for an outline of the issues.

What can I do? You can register your disgust with this utterly unacceptable policy by forwarding the Death Notice below to Premier Dalton McGuinty; David Ramsay, Minister of Natural Resources; Peter Kormos, MPP, NDP; John Tory, Leader of the Official Opposition along with your MPP. Provide your name and address to ensure a response. Maybe if enough voices are heard, McGuinty will finally honour his promise to reinstate progressive help for wildlife in Ontario.

The basic criteria -  Ontario must simply adopt the standards governing wildlife rehabilitation care and release that prevail throughout North America: Orphaned wildlife should be raised with others of their own species to learn proper con-specific social behaviours. The group should then be released in appropriate natural areas, with transitional care for those species that require it, generally within the city or county of origin. .

Voice your concern about these animals!

Please mail or email a death notice to the Ontario government.
